Who I Am Matters

 Who I Am Matters

Where do I come from?

Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Hui, you can also call me Matt, and I am from the quaint city of Altadena, CA--just north of Pasadena.

Where am I going?

I don't know where exactly I might end up, but I believe I will be taking a path towards a successful business analytics career while also making many lifelong memories and friends along the way.

How do I plan to get there?

I plan on getting there by doing well in my classes, networking with the great alumni, staff, and students of USC and being enthusiastic throughout the process!

How am I like my parents?

To be honest, I find it a little hard to find characteristics that I share with my parents. I think one of the main characteristics is being frugal and hard-working. I also have a tendency to still be proud and appreciative of my cultural background.

How am I unlike my parents?

While a little bit off-putting, I like to view myself as the complete opposite of my parents. As they are from an older generation, our viewpoints on life differ. From political stances to socialization, from hobbies to organizational skills, there are many facets of life that my parents and I differ on that I could spend a whole hour listing.

Have I developed my own expectations for myself?

I went through many life-changing events this past year. I believe I have came out a better person from it and have really been trying to own up to become a better person, both physically and mentally.

Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for me of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?

I believe one of my close friends, Syrena, is someone who lives life to the fullest and with great passion; being able to see the beauty in the mundanes of life. My personal responsibility role model is my high-school calculus teacher, Mr. Ong, who really taught me how to guide myself through life responsibly.

What wild animal do I feel a special connection with and why?

I feel a deep connection with cats. They are just so cute and I believe that their view on life is very similar to mine. The dream: become a cat, no responsibilities, just meow.

What is a significant childhood encounter than I had with a tree or plant?

Growing up with lemon and orange trees in my backyard, I have grown up to enjoy the characteristics of citrus, including it's acidic taste in food and fragrant notes in scents.

What is my horoscope?

I have found the following horoscope data about myself:

  • Sun Sign: 29 Degrees Aries
  • Moon Sign: 01 Degrees Taurus
  • Ascendant or Rising Sign: 28 Degrees Gemini
I do not know much about astrology and horoscopes so please let me know if this seems true compared to my personality or what it might mean for me in my future.

  1. I love all the pictures. The vibe you give off in this post very nicely aligns with the vibe you give off in class, which is really good that you have kinda already found your writing voice. Between a cat and a dog, I would choose to come back as a cat. Dogs have a great life, but I feel like they are very emotional and cats just do whatever they want and I love that. And it is very cool that you appreciate your culture! I struggled with that a lot growing up but I have also realized how cool culture is.

  2. Hello fellow 626 neighbor! I can also say I'm very different from my parents. We must exhibit their great qualities and unlearn the not so great. I admire your aspirations for becoming a better person in all aspects and dimensions. That's what life is all about! I strongly agree that cats are amazing. The people who get it, get it.

  3. Hi Matthew,
I love cats! I have a Russian Blue cat back home named Destiny and I consider her my daughter. I truly am jealous that they get to sleep all day long. I also have a lemon tree in my backyard, which has been really useful for making lemon desserts and lemonade. Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed learning more about you!

  4. Matt, I loved how you integrated photos to give us a better glimpse into your life. You truly are multi-faceted and I loved reading about who you are. As someone who grew up in an Asian household, I understand the generation gap too, and its something I strive to overcome myself. It can be tough sometimes but I know you got this!
